This is the story of Racheal Gabriel, a resilient young girl from Plateau State, Nigeria, who has endured more than any child should ever have to.
Racheal’s mother was forced to leave her father after suffering severe domestic violence and abuse. The constant beatings and emotional trauma made it impossible for her to stay. Pregnant and fighting for her life, she returned to her mother’s home for safety. Tragically, Racheal’s mother died while giving birth to her, leaving Racheal to grow up never knowing her parents.
From that moment on, Racheal’s grandmother became her only parent and caregiver. Despite her best efforts, life was a struggle. A distant relative offered to take Racheal to the city, promising to care for her and send her to school. It seemed like an opportunity for a better life—a chance for Racheal to get an education and escape the cycle of poverty.
But Racheal’s new life was anything but what was promised.
Abuse, Neglect, and Starvation: Racheal’s Unimaginable Struggles
Instead of being enrolled in school, Racheal faced a nightmare. Her relative never sent her to school, and worse, she accused Racheal of being a witch. Starvation, beatings, and constant mistreatment became her daily reality. Every small mistake or perceived fault led to brutal punishment. She was isolated, frightened, and completely abandoned by the one person who was supposed to protect her.
It wasn’t long before Racheal’s suffering caught the attention of concerned neighbors. They contacted her grandmother and reported the abuse. When Racheal’s grandmother arrived to rescue her, she found a broken but resilient young girl who had endured so much in silence.
Racheal’s Chance at a Better Future Through Education
Racheal’s story reached us at Core Start Education Foundation, and we were moved by her strength. When we interviewed her, we discovered a bright and hardworking girl, despite having never attended school. Her intelligence and potential were undeniable.
Thankfully, a local church provided Racheal and her grandmother with a place to stay, offering them temporary shelter. But Racheal still desperately needed what she had been denied for so long—an education.
At Core Start, we have made it our mission to help Racheal go to school and give her the chance to build a brighter future. But Racheal’s story is not unique. So many children in Nigeria face similar struggles, living in poverty, suffering abuse, and missing out on the opportunity for education.
